how do i get ubuntu - is there a guide for non-techies?

I suppose the issue is that I dont really like MS nor want to use their products - the other obvious alt being Mac which is good for some, but I never clicked. Then the other alt is Linux- however I dont want to have to tweak and test - I just want everything to work- what someone needs to make is something that seamlessly replaces windows and MS products, but is not.

I'm thinking about powering my next compy with a linux based system, but I also have the same concerns as westernwind. I'm a pretty tech savvy guy and i can hack around in a few programming languages but I still find linux intimidating. I guess i need to install a copy and just start playing with it....

I know that Dell does sell a turnkey Ubuntu laptop already pre-configured and working - however this is business machine priced 1200++ - and you are actually paying for Windows and then a license fee again to Microsoft for Dell breaking their Windows only agreement.

So unless you are ok with that - grab a laptop (64 bit preferred) and start tinkering. The nice thing about Ubuntu is it will run at twice the speed with half the hardware. So you can make old laptops new again.
